Professor Maria Lohan

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Professor Maria Lohan is Chair in Social Sciences and Health, UNESCO Chair in Gender Equality and is a consultant to the WHO Department of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Research.

Professor Lohan’s interdisciplinary team is dedicated to improving a/ the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women and girls through men’s engagement and support for gender equality and b/ meeting men’s own sexual and reproductive health needs.

She leads a programme of research undertaking systematic reviews and developing, evaluating, and implementing evidence-based educational and health care interventions, such as comprehensive sexuality education in schools and prisons to engage men and boys.

The objective of this research is to generate new thinking on men’s roles in sexual health, reproduction, and parenting and in promoting gender equality.

Research Interests

Supervising PhD students in the fields of

  • Relationship and Sexuality Education from early years to early adults (projects might cover identification of needs or programme co-design and evaluation and settings might include schools, or out of school settings such as secure care or prisons.
  • How can men and boys be part of the solution to global, sexual and reproductive health and rights?; Areas could reducing child marriage, unintended pregnancy or sexual violence;  infertility, family planning and abortion care.
  • Men's involvement in maternal and child health and parenting.
  • Men as partners and allies for change in promoting gender equality.

  • Impact case studies of research included in 2014 and 2021 UK Research Excellence Framework
  • Delivery of policy relevant presentations to the US Department of Health, Uruguay Department of Health, Health Services Executive of Ireland, UK Cabinet Office and Stormont parliament Northern Ireland.
  • Published work under World Health Organization Human Reproduction Programme website – Masculinities and SRHR evidence and gap map.
