Dr Carole Parsons

School of Pharmacy

Dr Parsons’ research interest focus on prescribing and use of medicines for people with life-limiting illness. She is interested in pain recognition, assessment and management in people with advanced dementia who are nearing the end of life, and medication management and optimisation for people with other terminal illnesses, including advanced cancer.

The objective of this research activity is to improve prescribing and symptom management for people and ultimately improve care for people with terminal illness.

  • Pharmacist-led medicines optimisation case management services: evaluation and development of the Medicines Optimisation in Older People (MOOP) model

Public outreach & key achievements

Policy and practice development in pain assessment and management for people with advanced dementia who are approaching the end of life highlighting the value of healthcare professionals sharing knowledge across specialties, care settings and disciplines, the inclusion of healthcare assistants in the multidisciplinary patient care team and the importance of ongoing, needs-driven healthcare professional education and training, to include case-based discussion and access to specialists with relevant clinical knowledge and expertise
