Dr Stefan Andreasson

School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics

Dr Andreasson currently teaches American Politics and the Global Political Economy of Energy. His research background is in the political economy of development with a particular focus on state-business relations in Africa. Another research strand relates to democracy and political development in post-colonial contexts, including the USA. His current research focusses on the agency of international oil and gas companies in the energy transition, and the international politics and history of oil more generally.

Research Interests

Open to PhD applications in three distinct areas:

  • political economy of development, in post-colonial Africa and South Africa in particular
  • energy transitions and the future of fossil fuels, especially the history and agency of international oil companies
  • American Politics, including energy politics and the history of "Big Oil", and conservative politics and political realignments in the context of American Political Development

Public outreach & key achievements

My research at Âé¶¹ÒùÔº has been funded by the ESRC World Economy and Finance Research Programme, the British Academy, the Nuffield Foundation and the DfE (NI) Global Challenges Research Fund.

Publications indicative of my key research interests have appeared in journals such as Business & Society, The Extractive Industries and Society, Energy Research & Social Science, Annual Review of Environment and Resources, Political Geography, Political Studies, Democratization, Third World Quarterly, Journal of Contemporary African Studies, and Commonwealth & Comparative Politics.

I am also the author of Africa’s Development Impasse: Rethinking the Political Economy of Transformation (Zed Books).
