Dr Tom Hulme

School Of History, Anthropology, Philosophy And Politics

Dr Hulme’s current research is focused on the history of Irish sexuality, particularly of male same-sex desire, from the 19th to mid-20th century.

He can also supervise more broadly in modern urban history in Britain, Ireland and the USA, in relation to: the culture of citizenship and belonging; urban festivals and celebrations; and practices of civic history and re-enactment.

  • Urban history from the late 19th to mid-20th century in Britain
  • The nature of citizenship and belonging
  • The history of male sexuality
  • The place of the past, and especially of historical re-enactment

  • I have appeared on BBC Radio and podcasts talking about the history of sexuality in Belfast
  • I am the Principal Investigator of a major AHRC-funded project, 'Queer Northern Ireland: Sexuality before Liberation' -
  • I previously led an AHRC-funded project on the history of the Mayflower in Britain -
