Professor David Phinnemore

School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics

Professor David Phinnemore’s research interests are focused on European integration and cover in particular processes of EU treaty reform and their impact on the EU, the political dynamics underpinning EU enlargement and the EU’s relations with European non-member states. The UK's withdrawal from the EU has led to a recent focus on the negotiation of ‘Brexit’ and in particular the implications of the Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland.

Public outreach & key achievements

Professor Phinnemore has provided evidence to parliamentary/assembly committees on Brexit and EU enlargement, and is engaged in promoting public understanding of Brexit and in particular the challenges and issues it raises for Northern Ireland, particularly with the Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland / Windsor Framework.

He is currently leading the four-year ESRC-funded project on Governance for 'a place between’:
the Multilevel Dynamics of Implementing the Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland.

He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences and Visiting Professor at the College of Europe (Bruges) where he teaches a postgraduate course on EU enlargement and UK withdrawal from the EU.

He has extensive media experience and has contributed comment on and analysis of Brexit and the Protocol/Windsor Framework to a range of print media and online platforms.
