G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) represent the largest family of proteins targeted by the pharmaceutical industry as they regulate the whole physiology. Canonically, GPCRs signal at the plasma membrane. However, recent studies revealed that several GPCRs also signal from intracellular compartments. Importantly, the nature of the cellular responses is determined by the signalling subcellular location, a concept termed as spatial bias.

Dr Plouffe’s research programme aims to understand the fundamental mechanisms underlying spatial bias to design novel and innovative therapeutics.
